The 6 Largest Opening Weekend Is “Deadpool & Wolverine”

It was a better Sunday than “Deadpool & Wolverine” had anticipated. Disney announced on Monday that the comic book movie made $211 million on its opening weekend in North American theaters.

That puts “Deadpool & Wolverine” in a different category, as it is $6 million more than what was projected on Sunday. The previous record for an R-rated film had already been surpassed. However, the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman feature, directed by Shawn Levy, has surpassed “Jurassic World,” which debuted at $208.8 million in 2015, to claim the sixth-highest opening weekend ever.

Without taking inflation into account, the Walt Disney Co. can now claim five of the six highest box office openers ever. These include two “Avengers” films, “Endgame” and “Infinity War,” and two “Star Wars” films, “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi.” “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which came out in second place and was produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony, is the lone exception.

Apart from that Deadpool & Wolverine outperformed “Avatar: The Way of Water,” increasing its global total to $444.3 million.
