Ariana Grande Unveils A Heartfelt Teaser For “The Boy Is Mine”

The eighth song on her most recent album, Eternal Sunshine, “The Boy is Mine,” features an eerie teaser that Ariana Grande released on Monday.

A man switches on the faucet and puts his face under the sink in the 10-second video that was uploaded to Instagram. A gruesome hand with opaque claws tries to pry open the door. The whole music video is scheduled for release on June 7. Earlier this year, the visuals for the successful songs “Yes, And?” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” were published. Her eighth album was released on March 8 and all three of these songs are from it.

Released on the same day as the album, the “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” video alludes to the scene in the 2004 movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind where Grande’s character starts a process to wipe all memories of her ex. The preview for “The Boy is Mine” has darker overtones, though.

“The Boy is Mine,” a 1998 Brandy and Monica song with an R&B-pop vibe, gave rise to internet allegations about her connection with Ethan Slater, the former lead in the Broadway show Spongebob Squarepants. Grande stated that she “always wanted to reimagine” the 1998 song that peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks in a March interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music.

Grande’s album Eternal Sunshine was called “a gorgeously exposed journey to the end of her world or at least what she believes to be the end” in a Rolling Stone review. With some of the most open and creative songs of her career to date, the singer navigates a fresh start on her divorce album that covers every phase of grieving.”

Soon, on November 27, Grande will play Glinda, the Good Witch of the East, in the novel-turned-musical-turned-film Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo as the Wicked Witch of the West.
