2002 Oscar Nominated “City Of God” Now Release On Gulf

Front Row Films Entertainment, a Middle East distributor, is all set to distribute the award-winning Rio de Janeiro, gangland drama “City of God” across the Gulf for the very first time.

The film was co-written and directed by Brazilian directors FERNANDO MEIRELLES and KATIA LUND and made waves in 2002 with its realistic portrayal of the escalating gang violence in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, featuring a young, unprofessional cast.

Front Row is a Dubai-based organization that initially released the film directly to DVD in the Persian Gulf due to various local restrictions, but now, 20 years later, Front Row continues to push for a theatrical re-release.

The February 22 release marks Front Row’s 21st anniversary since the film’s 2003 theatrical re-release following its world premiere at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the global re-release of the film on February 23.

City of God” is a film full of fire and brimstone as it burbles its way into the world of the Rio de Janeiro slum gangs. It is breathtaking and frightening, urgent in its engagement with its characters, and heralds the arrival of a new director with great gifts and great passions: remember the name. It’s been compared to Scorsese’s “Good Fellas,” and the comparison is apt: Scorsese began “Goodfellas” by quoting a narrator who says that for “as long as he can remember, he wanted to become a gangster”; the narrator of “City of God” seems to have no choice but to be one.
