Fact-checking date: October 13, 2026
Jacob Elordi’s Outer Dark is a promising film project for fans of the Australian actor and dark literary dramas. Unlike an entirely unverified casting rumor, the project has been listed by industry databases with Elordi and Lily-Rose Depp attached, and reports published in 2026 have also discussed the adaptation. However, its release date and production schedule should not be treated as confirmed unless supported by an official announcement or reliable production reporting.
This guide separates the reported details from the information that remains uncertain, including the cast, story, filming status and expected release.

Is Jacob Elordi Starring in Outer Dark?
Yes, Jacob Elordi has been associated with a planned feature-film adaptation of Outer Dark, the novel by American author Cormac McCarthy. IMDb lists Elordi and Lily-Rose Depp among the project’s cast, with László Nemes named as director. IMDbPro also describes the project as being in development.
A Spanish-language entertainment report published by Infobae on August 26, 2026, also discussed Elordi’s involvement in an Outer Dark adaptation alongside director László Nemes.
These details provide a stronger basis for reporting on the project than an unsupported social-media rumor. Nevertheless, a database listing and a media report are not the same as a complete studio announcement confirming every production detail.
For readers following Jacob Elordi’s upcoming movies, the key distinction is that Outer Dark is a reported project, but its full production schedule and release plans still require confirmation.
What Is Outer Dark About?
The Outer Dark film is an adaptation of the 1968 novel by Cormac McCarthy. Industry publication Screen Daily reported in November 2025 that the planned feature would adapt the novel and feature Jacob Elordi and Lily-Rose Depp.
The story takes place in Appalachia during the Great Depression. It follows a brother and sister whose lives are shaped by a disturbing family secret and the fate of a newborn child.
After the brother abandons the baby in the woods and lies about what happened, his sister sets out to find her child. Meanwhile, the siblings travel separately through the countryside, encountering three frightening strangers associated with violence and death.
The novel blends Southern Gothic atmosphere, moral conflict, isolation and unsettling elements of the supernatural. Its bleak themes make it a challenging source for a feature film.
One important distinction: this is not simply a film with a title that resembles McCarthy’s book. The available industry reporting specifically identifies the planned feature as an adaptation of Outer Dark.
However, the book’s storyline should not be confused with a confirmed final screenplay. The film’s exact scenes, changes to the source material and ending have not been established by the sources reviewed.
Outer Dark Cast and Characters
The currently reported principal cast includes two actors.
Jacob Elordi as Culla Holme
Elordi is attached to the adaptation and is listed in project databases as playing Culla Holme, the brother at the centre of the story. His other notable screen work includes Euphoria, Saltburn and Frankenstein.
Lily-Rose Depp as Rinthy Holme
Depp is the other reported lead. Project listings identify her character as Rinthy Holme, Culla’s sister, whose search for her missing child drives much of the narrative.
Who is directing the film?
László Nemes is attached as director and screenwriter. He is known for Son of Saul, the acclaimed Holocaust drama that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Screen Daily described Outer Dark as Nemes’s planned English-language debut. Clara Royer is also credited as a screenwriter in project listings.
Additional cast members and their characters have not been reliably established in the sources reviewed. It would be premature to publish a larger cast list without further confirmation.
Outer Dark Release Date: When Will It Come Out?
No verified release date
The sources reviewed do not establish an officially announced theatrical release date or streaming premiere for Outer Dark as of October 13, 2026.
The film was reported as a project intended to shoot in 2026. Screen Daily’s November 5, 2025, report specifically said that filming was planned for that year. That was a production target, not a confirmed release date.
The distinction matters because a planned filming year does not guarantee that production began on schedule, wrapped on time or secured a distributor.
There is also no verified premiere date in the sources reviewed for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or India.
Fans should therefore be cautious about websites presenting a specific 2026 or 2027 release date as definite without citing a distributor or production-company announcement.
Is Outer Dark in Production?
As of the research date, the strongest independently identifiable industry report confirms that the film was being prepared for a 2026 shoot. Good Chaos, the production company associated with the project, has also linked to coverage announcing Elordi and Depp’s involvement.
The available evidence supports describing the movie as a planned feature film with reported leads and an attached director. It does not, by itself, prove that principal photography has started or finished.
Here is the current information that can be reported responsibly:
| Production detail | Verified status |
|---|---|
| Project | Planned feature adaptation |
| Director | László Nemes |
| Screenwriters | László Nemes and Clara Royer |
