Yvonne Strahovski is sending shockwaves through The Handmaid’s Tale fandom after dropping cryptic—and chaotic—hints about the show’s final season. In a bombshell interview this week, the actress, who plays the cunning Serena Joy Waterford, teased that the Hulu dystopian drama’s sixth and final chapter will leave fans “breathless, angry, and maybe a little traumatized.”
“Let’s just say… nobody’s ready,” Strahovski told Variety with a sly grin. “The scripts are insane. I read them and thought, ‘How are we even going to film this without setting the world on fire?’” While staying tight-lipped on spoilers, she hinted that Serena’s fate will take a “wild, unpredictable turn” as Gilead’s crumbling regime sparks chaos. “She’s fighting for survival, but so is everyone else. The lines between hero and villain? Gone.”
Fans already know Season 5 ended with Serena fleeing to Toronto after her husband’s murder, holding June’s (Elisabeth Moss) baby as a twisted lifeline. But Strahovski warns the finale will upend alliances: “Expect betrayals you never saw coming. Relationships will explode. And yes, someone major dies—I’m still not over it.”
Showrunner Bruce Miller has called the final season “a revenge thriller meets existential meltdown,” with June and Serena’s toxic rivalry reaching a “point of no return.” Meanwhile, insiders claim the finale will fast-forward in time, mirroring Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel The Testaments, which introduces next-gen rebels.
With filming wrapped and editing underway, Strahovski says the cast is “haunted in the best way” by how the story ends. “It’s brutal, cathartic, and oddly hopeful? Maybe? You’ll need therapy—and a hug.”
